展览前言
具象表现绘画是源于西方画坛的另类绘画。其创作者被称为“画家中的画家”。他们不愿追随现当代艺术史发展的逻辑,而是回到绘画的本源,追问绘画的真实。他们以视觉直观的方式切入人与世界同在的存在论境域,开启绘画全新的创作方式。

具象表现绘画不是一种流派和风格,而是绘画求真的方法和道路。此道路直面从传统到当代艺术史内部二元对立的表象观念所引发的困境和危机。它穿越西方二战之后现代、后现代所笼罩的“绘画已死”“图像僵化”的重重迷雾和当下“AI虚拟”的泥沼,通向纯粹绘画的澄明场域。

具象表现绘画追求艺术的真理性而内在地贯通“山水媚道”“画可通道”“道法自然”的中国艺术精神。上世纪八十年代,司徒立先生运用现象学和东方象论总结其思想,提出具象表现绘画方法论,并于1991年将其传入中国。此后,在许江老院长的积极倡导和直接领导下,在教授团队的共同努力下,具象表现绘画成为“中西融合”“兼容并蓄”理念在二十一世纪深度推进的典范,建立了世界画坛创作、研究和教学的高端平台。这是绘画界三十余年持续不断的精神与学术的跬积,不唯在中国美术学院,在中国、在全球亦是开风气之先。

Emerging as an alternative painting movement within Western art, Figurative Expression Painting is practiced by creators often hailed as "painters' painters." Rejecting the established logic of modern and contemporary art historical progression, these artists return to painting's primordial source to interrogate its truth. Through visual immediacy, they engage with the ontological horizon of human-world coexistence, inaugurating radically renewed approaches to artistic creation.

Figurative Expression Painting constitutes neither a school nor a style, but rather a methodology and path toward pictorial truth-seeking. This path confronts the dilemmas and crises arising from the binary opposition between traditional and contemporary art historical paradigms. It traverses the postwar Western miasma of "painting's death" and "image ossification" under modernism/postmodernism, cuts through the current quagmire of "AI virtuality", and ultimately arrives at the luminous realm of pure painting.

While pursuing artistic truth, Figurative Expression Painting resonates intrinsically with the Chinese artistic ethos of "Shanshui embodying the Dao", "painting as a conduit to the Dao", and "the Dao following nature's course". In the 1980s, Prof. Szeto Lap synthesized phenomenological philosophy and Eastern image theory to formulate its methodological framework, introducing it to China in 1991. Under the visionary advocacy of Prof. Xu Jiang and through the concerted efforts of faculty teams, Figurative Expression Painting has become a paradigm for deepening 21st-century East-West synthesis and inclusive innovation. It has established a premier global platform for artistic creation, research, and education. This achievement represents over three decades of sustained intellectual and scholarly accumulation — pioneering not only within the China Academy of Art, but also across China and internationally in reshaping artistic discourse.
